Lessons from a Tree
Recently, the majestic 100-year-old silver maple tree in our front yard had to be cut down. It was a sad day for our family and our neighbors. This magnificent tree stood about 65 feet tall and provided a vast amount of shade on a hot summer day. The tree lived a purposeful life, but was rotting from the inside out. As I stood in the street witnessing the dimantling of the tree, limb-by-limb, tears ran down my face. As I wept, I reminded myself of the tree's long life, and the pleasure it brought to many people.

The tree appeared to be quite stable from the outside, yet for years it was slowly decaying from the inside out. I wondered, How could this happen? I expected this tall beautiful tree would be around for many years to come. Many things can cause a tree to die – too much moisture, not enough moisture, disease, not enough space to grow, or simply old age. In the case of the tree, it was suggested that the retaining wall crowded the roots that ultimately affected the tree's growth. Also, the huge amount of snow we received last year progressed its decay. Many environmental conditions and old age eventually destroyed the tree.

The situation of the tree is quite similar to the decay and slow death of most people. Often, I coach a client that appears from the outside to be doing just fine, although on the inside the person is being eaten away physically, emotionally or spiritually by conditions of life and stress. In the case of the tree, it was unable to tell us what was going on with its life. But when we investigated the tree more closely, we noticed that limbs fell off periodically, and there was a hollowness in the trunk. People, on the other hand do have a voice, and can express their pain, discontent, or imbalance on any level of their being when they become aware of it.

When interviewing a potential client, I ask the person, What's going on in your life that's brought you to me? Other questions include, How long has this been going on and what was the turning point in your realization of something not being "quite right"? Finally, I ask the person, What are you willing to do? Are you ready to take action to move forward? And are you able to give time, money and energy to create a better life for yourself?

In a way, life coaching helps you reverse the decay. Many times, you have a feeling that something isn't quite right, yet unable to identify it. With coaching, we work together to uncover your life's truth. The truth of overcoming an obstacle you're experiencing on a physical, emotional or spiritual level, or by creating ways to have a more pleasurable life. Life coaching is about focusing forward, and being proactive. Better yet, life coaching helps build stability in your life by discovering new ways for you to nurture, blossom and grow.

The retaining wall was an obstacle for the tree – it wasn't able to grow in that direction, and it became unstable, unbalanced, hurt. Unlike the tree, you have the power to design the life you desire. You have the opportunity to grow beyond the wall that you or others have created. You have the ability to reach beyond your mental constraints. As your coach, I will encourage you to grow, to stretch, to reach farther, and to embrace the world's unlimited possibilities.

I'm so thankful for the lessons that the beautiful silver maple tree shared with me. Also, I'm grateful for the shade, oxygen, and a sense of stability it created in my front yard. Life is about overcoming obstacles, living with purpose, and experiencing pleasure in the life of your design! Do you desire to focus your life forward, build stability and grow? Are you ready, willing and able to make the necessary changes to create the life you desire? If so, then life coaching is for you!

I'd like to help you take the next step in building stability – to nurture, blossom and grow in a focus forward direction.
