Count Your Blesings
Recently, my heart sank as I heard about a woman that is undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma. Here is a woman, just turned 50, working toward retirement – and suddenly is faced with only one challenge, her life. I am deeply saddened by the news, thinking, How could this be? Why did this happen?

Coincidentally, that evening I watched the movie, White Christmas, and tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney sing Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep. Life takes on a whole new perspective when faced with life and death situations. Here's the song, written by Irving Berlin:
When I'm worried and I can't sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep, counting my blessings

When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep, counting my blessings

I think about a nursery
And I picture curly heads
And one by one I count them
As they slumber in their beds

If you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep, counting your blessings

So if you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep, counting your blessings
As I listened to the song, I thought of the woman, and how precious life is on Earth. I then thought of My Portfolio of Wealth journal I started writing last month, and the multitude of blessings I have in my life. I counted more than 350 people, places, things, qualities, gifts and talents – blessings!

What are the blessings in your life? Are your health, your family, work that's fulfilling, love of family and friends, or a warm home some of the many blessings? Think of your life as one big movie, and you are playing the leading role. How active are you in your movie – your life? Do you lavish in the moments or mis-use your body just to "live for the moment"? Do you care for yourself as you do a baby or do you neglect yourself? Do you value your life and the people in it? Or do you take it or them for granted?

Sigmund Freud said that we have two basic needs, Love and work... work and love, that's all there is. There is truth in his words. How satisfying it is for me to give, receive and share my love to the world. And I welcome the delight, joy and challenges I face in my work as a life coach. I am grateful to have the freedom to love and to choose a fulfilling career – true blessings!

As you enter into a new year, count your blessings! Choose to live in a state of wellness, to experience love in your life, and to do work that is over the top. Take responsibility for your life and be active in the leading role. Do what you've always wanted to do. Celebrate your ability to learn, create, communicate and grow on all levels. Tap into your inherent wisdom that carries you through life. There are no time machines to take you back, only your time here and now to make positive changes in your life.
So if you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep, counting your blessings
If there was another verse to the song, it would be this,
And wake up with a new perspective to life
To give, receive and share love
To experience the joys and sorrows of life
To live richly, counting your blessings
And begin exploring new ones
